White Cameo Cuff

I finally finished my white cameo cuff bracelet. I started it before we left for Fla, but haven't done much serious beading since we got here. The cuff is 2" wide and has an aluminum cuff blank in between the base and lining to keep it's shape. I used all white beads with different sizes and finishes, and some lucite and glass flower shaped beads.
Boy, have I bought a ton of beads down here!

Beaded Cuff Bracelet

This one is in shades of ivory and terra cotta. Shopping for those was fun. Who knew there could be so many shades of ivory! I think the cab is some sort of agate. If you recognize it, please let me
know.
I added a few copper accents, which I really like and just made up the stitching as I
went along. Like a crazy quilt.
I used a 1 1/4" aluminum cuff blank to maintain the shape. I flatten the area where the
cab sits. And I used a soft flannel
for the backing. Feels good on the wrist.

Snowflake Bracelet

The Swarovski Snowflake pendant element is gorgeous. What a sparkler! Photos can't do it justice.
I used the silver leaf chain and added Swarovski pearls and rounds with bead caps. I also used some filigree snowflakes. I made the clasp with a larger silver bead and chain loop.

The rest of the bracelet is tubular peyote stitch with Delica Bead # 851, Matte Transparent Crystal AB and DB # 551, Bright Sterling Silver Plated.

Twisted Herringbone Bracelet

I finished beading this quite a bit ago. I wanted to put caps on the ends but finding just the 'right' ones took awhile. I really like these cones and the S hook, both in copper.
The bracelet is done in herringbone twist in Miyuki #40 copper, #21 steel, #1 gunmetal and #35 galvanized silver. Very simple to make and very pretty.

Winter Nights

Starlight, Starbright, or Starry Nights, both names are over used, I guess. How about Winter Nights? The stars seemed the brightest here in the winter. The tubular beads are stitched in peyote, using delica black #310 with an occasional bead of #551 for a sparkle. Silverplated stars, 10 and 12 mm and Swarovski stars, 20 mm and 28 mm are strung along a silver chain. I even found a star clasp.
A couple of hints.
Keep silver in a sealed bag when not in use. It will help keep the silver from tarnishing. Walmart sells polishing cloths that remove tarnish easily on small pieces.
When making tube beads, it helps to string some smaller beads inside the tube to keep it's shape.

Here is another project that I just needed to assemble and add a clasp. I found the Jet crystals at a flea market. Someone had made a bracelet on stretchy cord. I paid $1.00 for the bracelet, knowing I was cutting that baby apart as soon as I got home!
The center square is reversible. Red on black on one side and black on red on the other.

Fringed Geode

I started this late last winter and didn't finish the necklace portion. All done now. I made
the necklace portion long enough to just slip over head, so no clasp was necessary. I love
how the fringe beads pick up the blue from the geode. You can see more on the beading around

Russian Triangle

Someone passed this pattern onto me last summer and it's been one I've been wanting to try since I first saw it. It's one of those things that just make you say, "I've got to try that!" I believes it comes from Russia. I have seen it on various European sites dubbed 'The Twisted Triangle' or the "Russian Twisted Triangle.' It should be the "Drive You Mad Russian Triangle"!
But think cellini triangle, and it is really not hard. And yet, I worked on and off yesterday on one and started over 4 times. 4lb Fireline broke 3 times while keeping tension tight! Unbelievable! So today, I picked up 6lb test. And again, almost done and the 6lb broke. So, I start to think that it is not the Fireline itself, but sharp edges on the 15/0 delica beads. Fortunately, I had some Toho
rounded 15/0's. Finally, I completed the first half. A second triangle is now made and the two zipped together for a focal bead. But I'm also thinking that this half could now be stitched done to backing and become part of a beaded embroidery piece.

Stiff Felt for Beading Embroidery

Well, I have tried embroidering on some thin leather from Tandy, but it is still pretty hard on my fingers.
I even discovered I was piercing the tip of my index finger and didn't notice it. Just under the first
layer of skin and out again! Yikes! So, I went in search of the stiff felt some have recommended to me.
We passed a fabric store on the way to the apple orchard this weekend and stopped there. I found some stiff felt for $4.00 a yard x 60" wide. Nice! Only probably was they only had it in taupe. It's a nice neutral color though. Then off on a trip to town and Michaels. Armed with my weekly coupon.
Ah, Michaels! Stiff felt in 9x12 pieces in a rainbow of colors. Regularly prices at $.99 each but with this weeks coupon 40% off purchase. SCORE!

Tiger Eye Cuff

Since our 7th grade field trip to NYC where we visited the Museum of Natural History, tiger eye has been one of my favorite gemstone. My souvenir from the museum was a box with a dozen or so different gemstones.
This bead cuff features a tiger eye focal, chips and rice beads.

I stitched on lightweight suede leather, but it is tough on the fingers pushing a needle through it.

Copper Bracelet

Yes, more copper. This is a different bracelet. I still plan to make another to go with
the copper necklace. Components for this bracelet are available from fusionbeads.com, artfire.com or beadaholique.com
The copper leaves are already attached to the chain. I used a double length of it to make if fuller. And I added more components, -
small Swarovski pearls, Swarovski butterflies and some different shaped copper leaves.
Larger pearls with bead caps are also used. It's a free for all! Add what ever strikes your fancy.
The leaf chain is also available in silver. Would be great with snowflakes and white or icy blue pearls.

Copper Necklace - Part 3

Continuing on. I love the Swarovski butterflies. See # 9. And in #10, you'll notice the next few rings decrease in size down to a 9mm ring. the length of the necklace is now just about shoulder seam to shoulder seam on me. The rest will be chain with a clasp. BUT!! I am four jump rings short to finish up. So, I'm off to order more and will finish this as soon as the package comes. Of course, I just can't order 4 jump rings. I'll have to purchase a few more things, won't I?

Copper Necklace

Lots and lots of copper components and a variety of Swarovski crystals went into this necklace.
Inspiration for this piece was an ad by Beadaholiques in an old Bead and Button magazine. No one
was credited with the design, I think the ad was just to show off the components. I bought most of

Halloween Witch in the Moonlight

Here is a pattern created on Bead Creator Pro. I used two drop peyote here, using 11/0 delica beads. Finished piece measures 2" x 6.75". If you need more length, add additional rows at the beginning and end. 11/0 seed beads will make the piece slightly large.

Easy Wire Wrapped Ring

This is my first attempt at wire wrapped rings. I used 18 guage wire here. The main bead is 10 mm with 2 side beads. You can use any nice sized bead. I bought an inexpensive mandrel and ring sizer on ebay. It's a good starter kit.
Begin with a piece of wire 12-14". Center your bead(s) on the wire and bend each end snug against the bead. Determine your ring size and wrap the wire around the mandrel, just below your size.
The ring will get tighter are you work. You can stop here if you like a narrow band, but I like a little wider so I wrapped a second time. Keep one wire above the bead and one below the bead. Bend the lower
wire up and the upper wire down.
Wrap the ends of the wire snug up against the bead(s). Keep the coiling tight and smooth. Re-check sizing of the ring. Finish by trimming the wires and use crimping tool to tighten the cut ends so they don't scratch.

Here's a pattern for a cuff bracelet - 3 inches wide x 5 3/4 inches long. You can add length by adding extra rows on either side. Make it narrower by working with 15/0's instead of 11/s.
Add more color by making the moon shades of yellow. Two drop peyote works up fast. Have fun with it.

Sunflower Cuff Bracelet Pattern

Here's a pattern for a Sunflower Cuff Bracelet. Done in peyote stitch. It measure just under 2" wide and 7.37" length. You can adjust length by adding or subtracting rows. I left the background blank so you can choose your favorite color for that. Maybe another shade of green, golden yellow or even orange. I'm thinking of this as just the background. Maybe embellish the sunflowers with some dagger beads and a few golden and topaz beads embellishing the centers. Let your imagination run wild. Yes! Spring is finally arriving! Remember these photos from March 23? Here is the backyard today. I filled and hung the hummingbird feeder out on Thurs and Fri afternoon, the first hummer arrived. We've been busy cleaning up the yard, raking leaves left from the fall, putting out outdoor furniture and decorations. Still a lot to do, but we enjoy being outside and doing a little each day.

Last week, we were still getting snowflurries. Today, we'll be flirting with the 70's. It's warm here, but a weird warm. Stuffy heat, like when
you open an oven door. I won't be surprised if we get thunderstorms.
We are way, way behind cleaning up the garden. Some plants are sprouting,
Monkshood, crocus, pink bleeding hearts, among others.
And another sign of spring, the bear has been back. Pretty sure it is the same one from last fall.
He breaks the fence in the same two spots every time. He comes in the back and leaves from the side garden. I don't like him because he has no fear of humans. He sometimes comes in the day time - not good.

Birthday Present

Sorry the first part of this story went through before I finished. I've had my Golden Touch n Sew for over 30 years with a love / hate relationship. And finally the hate took over and I stopped sewing a long, long time ago.
Enter my friend Suzie (Snowflakesrtumblin). We've chatted over the years and miles about one day making dolls. I've bought fabrics and patterns, but every time I've looked at that Touch n Sew, it just dared me to take it out of the cabinet. Well a few weeks back, I did. I tried to sew with it, but again, it sewed a bit and then jammed all up again. Same thing it has always done.
So I said to hubby, ' I think I want a new sewing machine. Nothing fancy, just a basic sewing basic.'
So, Suz and I began the search. Now, if you EVER need to find anything on the net, ask Suz.
She is the Sorceress of Google searches! We were both searching and both came up with the
same machine. Suzie found a video about this machine on another site at the same time I was looking at it on the Walmart site. They don't have this machine in the store, but you can order is

I used to sew a lot years ago. I made almost all my clothes. Shirts and even a few suits for my husband. And then one day I traded my old Singer in for a new machine.
The new machine was a horrible, horrible machine. A Singer Futura. I had 3 of them in as many weeks. Finally, I took that back to the Singer store and took home a Touch and Sew. I really wasn't much happier with that machine. The salesman told me they didn't build machines any more for women who sewed like I did.

Bread Making

Bread making by my husband, Gary.

Two quick notes before I give you the recipe for this white bread.
1. I use a bread machine to do all the 'hard' work of making bread. My machine is set up for a basic loaf - 10 mins of mixing/kneading and 45 mins of rest/rise. If you can't program your machine, then set it for basic loaf and let it knead/mix for 7-10 mins then shut if off and let it
rise for 45 mins more. Or you can do it all by the hand the old fashioned way, keeping in mind the 7/10 min work and 45 min rise.

2. This recipe was developed by me, using Walmarts pre-packaged Great Value Pizza Dough.
There are name brands of the same item. The only thing you add to these packets are the water.
Walmarts brand cost 44 cents per package. These can be found in the pizza sauce/mix section.

This recipe will give you a crunchy/crusty loaf with a nice airy grain - good flavor and looks.
The ingredient list is for 2 recipes - 1 large loaf and 2 medium loaf recipe

Here's the recipe
In your bread machine pan - in the order given
1 Large Single Loaf - Recipe
1 cup warm water
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vinegar
1 1/2 tsp sugar
2 packages Pizza Dough
1 1/2 tsp dry yeast

2 Medium Loaves - Recipe
1 1/2 cup warm water
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vinegar
1 tbsp sugar
3 packages Pizza Dough
3 tsp dry yeast

1. Let your machine do the mixing, adjust the mix while it's working - dough too sticky, add flour, dough too dry, crumbly, add water - use regular flour and add water by tbsp. Mix/knead for 7-10 mins

2. Let Rest/Rise for 45 mins in machine

3. Remove from machine and using stretch and roll method, roll up the dough, shaping it to fit the bread pan(s). Grease bread pans, bottom and sides.

4. Preheat oven 30 seconds or just until it starts to feel warm. Turn oven off.

5. Place bread pan(s) in the warmed over and let rise for 45 mins to an hour until ready.
Use finger test to check if done rising.

6. Take out of the oven and heat over to 365 degrees - return loaves to heated oven and bake
for 35-40 mins or until done.

Night Out

Well, I should say late afternoon out. We don't go out at night much anymore.
We left home around 3 and went to Stroudsburg. Stopped at Borders Bookstore
and I bought 3 beading magazines, Wirework, Bead and Button and Beadstyle.
Then on to the Pocono Cheesecake Factory, http://www.poconocheesecake.com/products.html. Oh, cheesecake to die for. Bought a quarter
with cherry topping. We bought this to take home for desert first, because the store
would have been closed by the time we finished dinner at
Smugglers Cove, http://www.smugglerscove.net/tour.html. If you visit the Poconos, be sure to stop there. Our dinner was
fabulous. Icy cold beer and shrimp cocktail to start. Gary had gumbo and I had a salad
next, with warm bread. Then we each had 1/2 a large Maine lobster and steak (ribeye for me and NY strip for hubby), fries, and broccoli. We were so full, they practically had to roll us
out the door - lol. Home by 6:30 and I fell asleep within a hour - which is why I am up
so darn early this morning.
OH, and as we left The Smugglers Cove, I notice a BEAD shop along the way! A bead shop I haven't been to! Now, there's an adventure in the making - lol

Spring in the Greenhouse

I run plant co-ops through out the spring and summer. A group of us buy plants wholesale by the trays.
All the plants are shipped to me and I divide them up and send them on to their permanent homes.
Usually by the time the plants or bulbs arrive, I can leave them outside and pack them for shipping. BUT, it's still cold outside, snow on the ground and more coming tonight and possibly
later in the week.
I can fit some in the greenhouse, but I already had a lot of hostas overwintering in there, so there
isn't too much space. This week, I'm packing and shipping sedums, aka stonecrop. Hoping to get all these out in the mail before about 1200 lily bulbs arrived, followed by echinacea and heuchera.

Spring!

Spring? Yep, this is what greeted us yesterday morning. Almost 4 new inches of snow over night.
That stupid groundhog! Early spring, indeed. Even if he had called for 6 more weeks of winter, he would still be wrong!
Just when the winter's accumulation had almost melted! Little plants were peeking up out of the soil. This won't hurt them though. And neither will the 4-6 " called for tonight. Spring will win out!

'Onion Snow' is a term used here in PA. But regionally, it has different meanings.
Some say, Onion Snow is a wet spring snow that comes after the onions sprout.
Others, call the first (note they say 'first') wet spring snow after St Patrick's day, is the Onion Snow. It's safe to plant onions in the garden. Sure, if you can find the garden under all the snow!

Rivoli - Finishing Up

We'll add one more row to this piece. BUT when you work the second half, do not add this row.
That way, your two sides will zip together. And if you work with a slightly larger stone, you can
just add another row or two to accommodate it. Or leave off a row for a slighter smaller stone.

Baking Bread

Rivoli

This one calls for an 18mm rivoli, but I imagine any 18mm stone would work also.
A small circle of ultra suede to back the rivoli. I've been reading lately that the back
coating can be easily scratched and ruin the look of the rivoli.
11/0 delica beads. I'm using the bright silver DBS 41 here and the matte
silver DB 321
Step 1 - thread on 36 beads in this order
2 silver 1 matte silver 2 silver- tie in circle and pass thread through
the first 5 beads threaded on (2 silver, 1 matte, 2 silver, coming out in front of a matte bead)
Step 2 , add 2 silver beads and pass over 1 matte, and pass through 1 silver bead.
Step 3 - Add 1 matte bead, pass through 1 matte,
add 1 matte, pass through 1 silver (step 3A)
Step 4 - repeat Step 2 and 3 around
Step 5 - at end, pass through the first 2 silver beads added in this round
Step 6 - Add a matte bead, pass through a matte bead
Step 7 - add a silver bead, pass through a matte bead,
add a matte bead and go through the next 2 silver beads Step 7A

Peyote Tube Bead - WIP & Book Review

My next project is inspired by Starry Nights on page 54 of the book Bead Tube Jewelry by Nancy Zellers - this book is a 'must have'. It is full of fun projects to make with easy Peyote Bead Tubes. Lots of different charts for peyote patterns. Her Starry Night pattern is a bracelet and calls for 70 silver stars. I couldn't find enough stars in the right sizes, so I'm using the idea of the stars but it will be totally different and a necklace. I don't know if I'll use all the stars pictured here. I have some silver ones and some
Swarovski's crystal stars.
Delica's - I'm using all matte black #310
and galvanized silver #551. If you shop for delica's, you'll see #1831 is supposed to be a non-tarnishing silver, forget it. I purchased 1831 in Nov and they are still in the flip top box and seem to be turning color already, while I've had #551 for at least a year and a half and they are still bright silver.
Peyote Bead Tubes are made by making small strips of peyote stitch, even count is the easiest.
The small pieces are rolled and zipped up into a tube shape. I'll have more details in the next post. The tubes can be made small or large, and short to long in length. Delica beads make the
best tubes because the beads fit so tightly together.

Beaded Bead - Seed Bead Berry - Part 2

When you reach the shoulder at the other end of the bead - the next row will be add 1 bead
- pass through 2 beads, keep tension tight. Step 6
Step 7 - add a bead, pass through 1 bead, add another, continue around, keeping tension tight.
Step 8 - This row will depend on the size bead you are using, add a bead, pass through a bead, continue until you close gap.
Step 9 - Add a bead, pass through two beads, keeping tension tight.

And here are some ways to dress up your beaded bead.

I think next time I would definitely paint the wooden bead first. This weave is more open than peyote with delica's.

Beaded Bead - Seed Bead Berry

This one is done in 11/0 Seed beads. Done in red, it kind of looks like a raspberry.
I am using a wooden bead for the core, approx 12/14 mm but you can use any bead, even a pearl.
Step 1 - begin with 4 beads threaded and tied in a circle. Go through 1st bead again.
Step 2 Add 1 bead, pass through next, add a bead, pass through next. Continue around until you add last bead, pass through bead and pass through 1 st bead added in this round
Step 3 - Add 2 beads and pass needle through corner bead - repeat around. At the end of this round, add the last two beads, go through corner bead and up through the #1 bead added in this
round.
Step 4 - Add a bead, go through the next, add a bead, repeat around, coming up through the last bead and the first bead added in this round. You'll notice you are now doing peyote in the round.
At the end of each round, be sure to step up by again passing through the first bead added in the round.
Step 5 - ? Repeat Step 4 until you reach the other 'shoulder' on the other end of the bead. This will vary depending on the size of your bead. Keep tension medium tight to keep shape with the bead.
In the next post, we'll decrease and finish.

Beaded Bead - Peyote - Part 4

We now have two halves of equal size. What we do next depends on the size of the bead
we're covering. One half of the bead needs one more row than the other so the the peyote
stitch lines up and all we do is 'zip' the two sides together.
I've chosen a slightly larger bead to cover - again about 3/4 ". I've added 4 more peyote rows on one half and 5 more rows on the other half. See how the peyote stitch lines up in Pic 3. To zip them together, you just match up your beads on each half like zipper teeth and pass the needle
back and forth from one side to the other, closing up the zipper.
I find hold the whole thing together with a tooth pick works good.
After you zip the two
sides together, work in your thread ends and you are finished.

Before we put the two halves together, I wanted to point out some other possibilities.
As you can see in Picture 4 here, we have a nice star pattern. You can use this pattern for
larger or smaller beads, by leaving a row or two off or adding a few rows. And increasing
the number of regular peyote rows it takes to connect the two pieces. Pic 1
You can use only half of the pattern for a bead such as a fan pull and peyote in the round up the sides - Pic 2.
Your bead doesn't have to be total round - Pic 3 - is the olive shaped wooden bead.

Someone made this for me a few years back. It's great for keeping my tools organized and for traveling when we go to Fla. It can be rolled up or tri-folded, depending on where I want to store or carry it, and it ties together neatly with a ribbon. I though maybe some of the sewers here

Beaded Bead - Peyote - Pt 1

Just one of the many patterns and styles. This bead is very easy, but looks fantastic because of the different colors used. You can do it in a solid color also.
Again this is done in Delica beads. I have used #310 black, 105 dark red, and 40 copper here.
Keep tension medium.
Step 1 Begin with string 5 black and tying in a circle. Go through 1st bead strung.
Step 2 Add 1 copper bead, go through next black bead, add 1 copper, repeat around. When you add
last copper bead and go through black bead, also go through the first copper bead added to
jump up to the next round.
Step 3 Add 2 copper beads and go through next copper bead, repeat around. When you add the last
2 copper beads, come up through 1 copper bead added in this round.
Step 4 Add 1 copper bead, go through next bead, add 1 red bead, go through next, add 1 copper, repeat around. When you add the last red, go through the copper bead, and up through the 1st copper
bead added in this round.
Step 5 Add 1 red bead between each bead in this round. When this row is complete, come up through
first red bead added in this round
Step 6 Add 1 black bead - pass through 1 red bead, add 2 reds and pass through 1 red, add 1 black bead and pass through red, repeat around

Continue rounds of herringbone stitch until you are about even with the shoulder of
the wooden or core bead. Now, we'll start to reduce.
Step 15 After you create the black herringbone stitch in this row, you'll come up in the silver
herringbone row and add only 1 silver bead.
Step 16 Go back down through the silver bead and come up in the copper herringbone stitch.
Create herringbone stitch.
Add only 1 silver bead in the next silver area, create black herringbone stitch.
Repeat around add only 1 silver bead in the silver rows and creating normal herringbone
stitch in the black and copper area.
Step 17 Start the next row with the black herringbone stitch, coming down through the black bead,
pass through the single silver bead, and up through the copper bead.
Add only 1 copper bead in the copper herringbone area, repeat around.
Only the black herringbone stitch is repeated in this row.
Do a little pushing and squeezing here to shaped the bead work around your core bead.
Step 18, create black herringbone stitch, add 1 black bead, pass through copper bead,

and pushing beads together.

Beaded Bead #1 Tut

Let's start with this one. http://vyolina.skyrock.com/83.html I'm doing this in stripes like her tut, to show the stitches better, but it would look great in a solid color also. Use delica's for this herringbone stitch. Keep tension tight.
Be sure your thread does not twist when making the herring bone stitch, keep the thread straight out of one bead and into the next without twisting. Don't be put off by the number of
steps I have here, I tried to go really slow :)
Step 1 - Thread on 8 black delica's and tie in a circle. Pass needle through the first bead on.
Step 2 - Add 2 black beads and go through the next 2 bead, repeat around, adding 2, passing through 2 - After you add the last 2 and pass through the last 2, pass the needle up through
the 1 bead added in this step.
Step 3 - Add 2 beads and go back down through the next bead (bead #2 in above step). You are
creating herring bone stitches here.
Step 4 - Add 1 copper bead and go up through next 'corner' bead
Step 5 - Repeat Steps 3 and 4 - 3 more times - ending with passing the needle up through the first bead added in Step 3.
Step 6 - Add 2 black beads - and down through only 1 of the black beads in this herringbone stitch.
Step 7 - Add 1 copper bead, pass through the previous copper bead and add another copper bead. Pass needle through the black bead of herringbone stitch. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 around.
Step 7a - come up through 2 black herringbone beads to be in position to start next row
Step 8 - Add 2 black beads and create herringbone stitch. Add 1 Silver bead and go through
1 copper bead, add 2 copper beads and create herringbone stitch coming done through copper
bead, add 1 silver bead and come up through black herring bone stitch. Repeat around ending

Beaded Beads

A lot of beaded beads are worked over wooden beads of various shapes and sizes. This keeps the shape of the bead and prevents it from collapsing. You can even use inexpensive round beads or pearls. Michaels, Walmart and other craft stores sell them in
a variety of sizes. Check the woodcraft aisle and the bead area. Besides round beads, look for oval, squares, spools, and even ones that look like fan pulls. Some of the beaded bead designs look better if you paint the the wooden core bead to match the
colors you are using.
Here are some sample beaded beads and I'll do a couple of tut's on them this week. There are so many variations you can do with pattern and colors, no two beaded need look alike!

Russian Leaf done in St Petersburg Chain Stitch, Part 2

Step 8 After you have made two equal sides and joined them, add enough beads to comfortably run to the bottom two inside contrast beads. The number will vary depending on the size of your leaf and whether you have used delica's or seed beads. This is your main 'vein' in the leaf.

Russian Leaf done in St Petersburg Chain Stitch works up better in small to medium sizes so they hold their shape. Delicas or Seed beads work well. We'll be working one side of the leaf at a time.
Step 1 Center stop bead on a yard or so of Fire Line
Add 2 beads main color, 1 bead contrast, 2 beads main color.
Step2 Thread needle back around through all 5 beads exiting up through Bead #5
Step 3 Add 4 beads and go back up through beads #1 & 2 of these 4, (see previous post on St Petersburg Chain)
Step 4 - Add your contrast bead and go back down through beads 1&2 & Bead #5
Step 5 - Add contrast bead and go up through Bead #3 and 4. (see my previous post
on St Petersburg Chain Stitch if you need more help) For this leaf I did about 9 rows
Step 6 - flip work and repeat from Step 3 above for the second side of leaf

I am still working on the necklace portion of the geode necklace. But these beads arrived today.
The stone in the center is a Dogtooth Amethyst that I purchased in Fla. I won't be using all these colors, but some. I think I want some Swarovski bi cones in two shades of lavender also.
I've got three or four projects in mind, it's just a matter of which one I find the right colors for first.
Back to my geode. I almost have half the necklace strap finished.

Geode - St Petersburg Chain

This is the St Petersburg Chain that I am making as the necklace portion of the Geode piece.
The instructions are in the previous post. I am using drop beads in Color # 148F, (same as in the fringe) for my contrast bead, and alternating 132F and 1004 for the 4 bead addition. These two colors are also used around the geode and in the fringe.
I'll make two length of the chain and attach on either side of the geode, hopefully adjusting it just right to get the angle I want. It should work :)

St Petersburg Chain

St Petersburg chain is easy, but looks fancy.
Step 1 is starts with a stop bead and a yard or more of Fireline or your favorite thread.
Step 1
Add 6 beads in your main color
Step 2 pass the needle back through Beads # 3 and 4.
Step 2A Pull tight, note it looks like a little flag.
Step3 Add a contrast bead and go back down through Bead # 4, 3 and 2
Step 4 Add a contrast bead and go up through Bead #5 and 6, - the outer edge of that little flag
Step 5 Now for the repeats - Bead 5 and 6 become #1 and 2 in each repeat.
Add 4 beads - You now have 6 beads as in Step 1 Photo - Repeat Steps 2 - 4 again until you reach desired length.

Geode - Lovin' the Fringe

I finished the fringe and I love how it looks. I used 11/0 Miyuki color # 1104 and 132FR, these colors are also used around the geode. I also used Drop Beads, #251 and the frosted white is Toho Magatama #1F and the frosted blue is Miyuki Drop #148F and Miyuki Long Magatama #148. The blue and white pick up the center colors of the geode nicely. I'll be working the blue into the necklace portion also. I hope to get the stone to hang at the angle I have here rather than straight
up and down.

Fringe Grid Paper and Update on Geode

You can print this out and design your own fringes, coloring in as needed.
If you have a beading program you can do this on the computer just by clicking on the beads to color them.

The geode is coming along nicely. But I am going to do a few more rows with 15/0's to be sure it's really tight. I'm going to add fringe, so I don't want the weight of the fringe pull on it.

WIP - Beading around a Geode Slice

I'm beading around one of the geode slices I bought in Florida. I started with a base string of
beads, 11/0's, long enough to go around the outer edge of the geode. I did about 4 rows in Peyote.
Then I fit the beaded strap around the out side of the geode and I'm starting to bead the reduction rows now. The reduction rows will be done on the front and back sides of the geode. It will not
be stitched to or glue to any backing. The masking tape helps to hold the strap in place while stitching the reduction rows. Just re-position as needed until your reduction rows are tight enough to work without it.

Ah, the Ups and Downs of Making a Living

Some have asked how I store my beads. I'm using plastic boxes from Walmart's sporting goods
section. They measure 8" x 14" x 2" deep. They come with adjustable dividers for inside. I like to keep all my seed beads and Delica's in the small 2" x 2 1/2" bags. All the different sized tubes, and flip top boxes take up too much space. And I end up spilling more using them also.
Delicas are Miyuki beads and I mostly buy Miyuki seed beads also.
I used the BeadCreatorPro and Beadelator program to make patterns. Each of these can be
program to used the Miyuki Bead Number and give you a shopping list for the pattern you create. So as I collected beads I just found it easier to keep
them in numerical order. The Delicas are separated from the seed beads. I also have a note book
with every number that I have, so I can tell at a glance if I have a number or not. It makes online buying easier. lol - and that's about as organized as I am!
I have 19 of these boxes now. I need another 3 or 4 to finish up. I have a small computer desk in this room. My big loom is on top of the desk. The tray that normally pulls out for the keyboard, holds miscellaneous jewelry board and do dads, and the bead boxes are below and you can see
there is plenty of room for more there.

An 11/0 Delica is slightly smaller than an 11/0 seed bead. A seed bead has a round edge to it while a Delica is a straight cut and each bead fits snug up against the other. It's called Tiling.
I think Delica beads are better for loom work, and structural pieces, pieces that you want
to have a stiffer body, keep their shape on their own.

Book Review - The White Russian Beading Book

Ok, that's not really the title, but I have never seen anyone mention what the title on the cover
translates to, and I can't type it here because we don't have all the keys necessary to type it in Russian.
So it's commonly called The White Russian Beading book. And yes, you can google it by entering
the White Russian Beading Book. It's totally written in Russian.
Why buy a book in Russian if you can't read Russian? It's a BEADING BOOK, of course. lol
But, really, it has some fantastic beading eye candy. A lot of the real, old world, designs. And oh, it has charts, step by step charts, that need no translation. Seed beads of various sizes and bugles are used quite a bit.
It's a 400 page, hard back book. It's a little expensive, but check Ebay often for it and you might
luck out. I found a copy there 2 years ago for a reasonable price. It's a wonderful book.

Continue repeating Steps 3 through 5B, decreasing at the end and increasing at the other as shown.
I can't tell you a specific number of rows because that will depend on the size of leaf you wish
to make. For now, we'll go with 8 rows.
Remove Stop Bead and flip work, Step 6 and repeat Steps 1 through 5B until both sides are even. Step 7
I've added the silver picot bead along the final edge.

Next step also depends on your purpose for the leaves. You attach each of the ends together
to form the leaves. (Finished Leaf) Your pattern may call for several leaves attached to each other to form a flower,
or a single leaf for earrings, or a string of them for a necklace. Again, these can be made in a variety of sizes.

Russian Leaf Done in Peyote Part 1

I had a request for a tutorial for Russian Leaves. I'll do them in Peyote first and then
St Petersburg Chain.

Russian leaves can be made in any size, from small embellishment size to extra large collar size.
The width of the leaf is determined by the number of beads in your starting row. For a tutorial size here, I am making a medium large leaf.

Russian leaves are worked one side at a time. You start with an even number of beads. I like Delicas best, but seed beads also work. I am also using a picot at the end of each row, shown here in silver. If you want a plain edge, just eliminate the silver bead.

Take a length of Fireline or thread, about a yard is sufficient for a regular sized leaf. Center a stop bead on the thread, you'll use the other half for the other side of leaf. I'm starting here with a picot bead, 16 delicas (remember start with an even number) and 3 picot SEE STEP 1
beads to make the point. Turn the needle and go back through the last bead of the main color.
Let the silver picot beads form a point. SEE STEP 1A. Then you will work the rest of the black beads in peyote. STEP 2

At the end of the row, you'll turn and work the next row in peyote,STEP 3 this time stopping one bead
short from the end of the row Step 3A. You are making a reduction here by stopping short. Add Picot silver bead and turn. Step 4 Complete row in peyote. At the end of this row, you make an addition.
Add 2 black beads and 1 picot bead. Step 5 Bring the need back through the first of the 2 black beads
just added. Step 5 APull tight, keeping the picot bead to the left, inside, and you'll see you are in position to finish the row in peyote again. Step 5B

Bead Table Wednesday. My herringbone is bracelet length, but I decided I want some End Caps for it before adding the clasp. So, I'm going to order them. And while ordering, I want to choose a few more beads to go with the Budha (what is correct spelling? I see it both with one d and 2 ds) shown here. This will be a bead embroidery project. I think I probably have enough beads in jade color, but want more in the brown and/or bronze color.

WIP Metallic Herringbone Bracelet

After putzing around with some red swarovski hearts for a week, I gave up. I was trying to combine cubes and hearts and it just wasn't working for me. So I put them away and will try
again some time in the future.
Yesterday and today have been so cold, we are not even venturing out of the house. I started
this herringbone stitch bracelet yesterday and should have it finished tonight or tomorrow.
This is worked with delicas in color numbers

As you can see, I am working on a reed. The type you use for a kabbob or reed air freshener.
It makes it very easy to stitch you piece and slides right off when you reach your desired length.

Magatama Beads - Russian Spiral Bracelet

After the first inch or so, I thought I wouldn't like this bracelet. But then it started to look familiar to me. The matte black and the silver - what was it? Then it dawned on me. Motorcycle leathers! This would have looked so great with my riding leathers. We sold our bike two years ago due
to my husbands health issues, but I still have my jacket. So, I thought I'd remind those of you who
sell at shows, be sure to make some things that aren't so girly girl. Think about what might appeal to other people.

Shells - Part 2

And here is the last of the types of seashells we collected this year. We did end up with a nice bag of them.
And what I did with them. Last year, I bought a nice shadow box from Michaels and hubby stained the box. I filled the shadow box with different varieties of shells and it's all ready to hang. I have quite a bit leftover and will probably fill a nice decorative glass jar, bowl or vase with those.

12 Random Things about Me

Joni Nickrent, here at the Hive, shared 12 random things about herself and asked us to do the same so here are mine.

1. My dad lost his right arm when he was a young man. It never stopped him from doing anything. I always figured if he could try anything, so could I.
2. I loved stenography in high school. The teacher couldn't talk fast enough. I could do
240 words per minute.
3. My mom died when I was 19, I had a brand new baby and a husband in Vietnam, and my older sister has learning disabilities.
4. My first job was at Ft Monmouth NJ -
5. I met my second husband there when he returned from Vietnam. He became a police
officer in north jersey and I took a job as a health claims adjuster for union members.
6. I became a union shop steward when I found out that this same office would not allow the women
working there to join a union. We not only joined a union, but our salaries were almost doubled and we acquired paid sick days.
7. At one time I had over 1,000 african violets growing under lights, and shipped leaf cuttings all over the world. Now, I grow over 1,000 different varieties of Hosta.
8. I run co-ops every year to buy plants and bulbs at wholesale prices.
9. I collect tea pots, Rowe pottery and blue willow china
10. We live in the woods in a small log cabin. My sister has lived with us for over 20 years.
11. I wouldn't be here if my Grandmother hadn't missed the boat - Titanic!
12. At one time, I made all my clothes and even suits for my husband.

Shells, Shells and More Shells

Actually, pickin's have been slim this year. We usually find a grocery bag full of nice shells, but not this year. Here are some of the treasure we did find. I'll have more shells photo's tomorrow.
Usually, we find some larger ones, but this year, they are fairly small, but a lot are perfect.

Osprey

It's windy and cold, yes, darn right cold here in FL this morning. This is our last week here before we head home on the weekend. The weather looks good for traveling by then. I caught these pic's this morning of an osprey. He was across the street from our balcony enjoying his breakfast.
We have a pair of osprey that nest close to the house in the summer. I couldn't help wonder if this was one our osprey and if he was thinking the same thing we are - damn, it's warmer in the Poconos!

The shop has a great selection of loose teas, a large variety of sea salts. I love the
different flavors, and oh, just all kinds of spices and cooking herbs. The shop smells divine.
They also sell salt and pepper mills, special 'house blends' of various meat rubs, even large
chunks of salts and microplanes to shave it.
And Vic is very personable, he makes everyone feel welcome.

St John's Pass is a must see area if you are in the area. Plenty of shops and restaurants. Casino cruises, fishing charters, and we even spotted 4 dolphins in the water this morning.

The Teapots are Multiplying!

Again! Here's a cute miniature set I found in a store done in St Pete's Beach. The little Snowman Set. The biggest piece, the teapot is 2" high and the plate is about 4" wide. Cute.

And then, the white one is a full size pot, decorated with silver (it's more than likely white gold) overlay. It's either bone china or porcelain. The light passes through it. A great find at the flea market this morning.

And the cats in the chair teapot is a just for fun one. The floor lamp is the handle. And the vase on the table is the spout. This teapot is also full size, about 7" handle to spout.

Gary keeps saying he doesn't know how we're going to fit all this in the car for the trip home, but he keeps pointing them out to me - lol

Hearts on the Beach - Another Walk

Yesterday, we found the beach just full of Pen Shells. I mean THOUSANDS of them! As far as we could see up and down the beach and tumbling in the surf.

Then have a rather rough exterior that looks like feather quills and the insides can be very
iridescent, like a deep blue to purple mother of pearl finish.
We found two that were actually opened flat in the shape of hearts. I don't know how they
survived the tumbling surf. Especially the one with
barnacles inside. That one must have been open for quite some time.
